A mí siempre me gustó estudiar, pero cuando era niña mi papá no me dio la oportunidad de estudiar toda la primaria. Cuando crecí me casé y ya no quería estudiar; tuve dos hijas y yo sí quise que ellas estudiaran. Cuando mi hija menor estaba en sexto grado su maestro me dijo que por qué yo no estudiaba; le dije que porque ya estaba grande, tenía 37 años.

Cuando tenía 48 años entré a trabajar a una tienda grande y yo quería subir de puesto, pero no podía por falta de estudios. Hasta que un día me dijo mi jefa de departamento y mi subgerente que si no quería estudiar para subir de puesto; yo les dije que sí pero que no tenía tiempo. Ellas me dijeron que me darían permiso para ir a la escuela en horas de trabajo y yo acepté muy contenta, porque yo siempre quise estudiar y ahora se me estaba dando la oportunidad de estudiar.
Fui y se lo comenté a mis hijas y a ellas les dio mucho gusto y me apoyaron.
Tengo dos hermanas menores que yo cuando les comenté que iba a estudiar también les dio mucho gusto, y ahora que ya estoy estudiando pronto voy a ganar mejor sueldo y estoy muy feliz.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
María de Lourdes: “I was old, I was 37 years old”
I’ve always liked to study, but when I was a child my father wouldn’t give me the opportunity to finish elementary school. When I grew up and got married I didn’t want to study anymore.
I had two daughters, and I wanted them to go to school. When my younger child was in sixth grade her teacher asked me why I wouldn’t study; I told him that I too was old, I was 37 years old. When I was 48, I started to work for a big shop and wanted to be promoted, but I just couldn’t because I didn’t have formal education.
One day, my boss came to me and asked if I wanted to study in order to be promoted; I agreed, but I did tell her I had no time. She told me they would release me to attend school during work time, and I gladly agreed, because I’ve always wanted to study, and now they were giving me that opportunity.
I told my daughters about it and they were happy and supportive.
I have two sisters, and when I told them that I was going to study, they were happy. And now that I’m in school again I’ll be paid a better salary, and I’m very happy about it.
